Integrative Cancer Care
The St. Charles Cancer Treatment Center's Integrative Oncology Program uses the best evidence-based practices to manage the symptoms associated with cancer and its treatment. This means that complementary medicine practices, such as acupuncture, massage, good nutrition and stress management may be used to support the patient during and after traditional treatments such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy or surgery.
Many complementary therapies help promote a relaxation response, described as an increased sense of peace and well-being. This measurable response may help the body's natural healing process by decreasing heart rate, respiratory rate and muscle tension, which may increase the immune response.
Instead of just treating the physical disease, the St. Charles Integrative Oncology Program works with the whole patient in a number of life-affirming ways.
All of the therapies listed below have been proven to be effective and safe when used according to the guidelines from the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO ). This international organization, formed by leading oncologists, was established to scientifically evaluate evidence supporting complementary therapies and recommend best practices. The guidelines developed by the SIO form the foundation of our integrative cancer care program. Please ask us for more information on any of these topics, including any referrals we may have.

CAM: Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Complementary Therapies are used together with conventional medicine. They are used primarily to treat the symptoms associated with cancer and cancer therapies.
Alternative Medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. These therapies have not been shown in randomized controlled trials to provide a benefit and in some cases, have been shown to cause harm. We advise our patients to avoid therapies promoted as "alternatives" to mainstream medicine.
Integrative Medicine combines complementary therapies with mainstream conventional medicine.
