Community-Based Laboratory Service

The laboratory team includes departments of Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, and Blood Bank each led by expert coordinators. The Lab Director, Technical Supervisor, Supervisors of in and out-patient phlebotomy, support services and couriers rounds out the management team.

Community-Based Laboratory Services

St. Charles laboratories provide clinical laboratory testing for inpatients of the hospitals in Bend and Redmond. In addition, the labs have established an extended network to provide laboratory service to outpatients from provider offices in Bend, Redmond, La Pine, and Christmas Valley. Long-term care and other homecare facilities are served by dedicated home-draw phlebotomists who travel to and from these facilities throughout Central Oregon for patient and family convenience.

Working closely with regional hospitals in Prineville, Madras, John Day and Burns in the goal to promote community-based care, the St. Charles lab provides daily testing and referral laboratory services for these hospitals. Receiving care close to home assures your health history is consistently available for providers making your health care decisions.

Fast, Accurate Results

An extensive courier network provides sample pickup several times throughout the day in each Central Oregon community and every day, including weekends, at Harney District Hospital in Burns and Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day. This assures the fastest results for testing back to providers, many times within hours of the sample collection, for the majority of tests being ordered.

Hospitals have relied on the expertise of the St. Charles Laboratory Microbiology Department for testing of cultures collected in their facilities. Samples are placed on various types of media to grow and are worked up by microbiology specialists with years of experience in identifying bacteria, fungus, viruses and parasites.

Realizing that patients have a choice for where their tests are performed, the St. Charles Laboratory offers several options for reporting laboratory tests for area providers. Besides the usual written reports by fax or courier drop-off, on-line results are available to providers within 10 minutes of the test being completed.
