What Happens During A Sleep Study?

A polysomnogram is a test that monitors 17 different bodily functions during sleep in order to help diagnose a sleep disorder. Sleep studies should always be ordered and interpreted by a medical doctor who specializes in sleep disorders.

If you’re a patient at the High Desert Sleep c enter , your sleep physician will first determine if you need a sleep study. If you do, you’ll arrive at the sleep center in the early evening, stay the night for the study and leave the next morning. During the study, you’ll sleep in a private room while being monitored.

Each test in the study will vary depending on the individual. Electrodes will be placed on the surface of your scalp, face, chest and lower legs to measure things like:

  • Brain waves
  • Heart rhythms
  • Eye movement
  • Leg movements
  • Breathing effort and movement
  • Blood oxygen levels
