Stroke Care at St. Charles

Did you know that someone has a stroke about every 45 seconds?

More than 750,000 Americans suffer from a stroke every year. As the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer, stroke is also a leading cause of serious, long-term disabilities.

Stroke is like a heart attack but the attack is in the brain instead of the heart. It occurs when blood can’t get to an area of the brain because of a blocked artery or when a blood vessel bursts and bleeds into the brain.

Thankfully, major advancements in stroke care have made many medications and procedures available to treat and prevent strokes. However, as with any treatment, the risks and benefits must be carefully considered on a case by case basis.

Comprehensive Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention

The stroke care program at St. Charles Bend provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of stroke conditions, both emergency and routine. We provide acute care for stroke victims during the critical first few hours after the onset of symptoms, as well as cutting-edge surgical and non-surgical procedures (such as interventional neuroradiology), preventative and post-stroke therapies, including rehabilitation.

Because time is one of the biggest factors in treating a stroke, the first place a stroke victim is treated is at the hospital's Emergency Department. We have a highly coordinated, multi-disciplinary rapid response system for treating stroke victims. The team includes neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, emergency medicine, rehabilitative specialists, and a dedicated nursing staff specializing in stroke.

Since strokes can happen unexpectedly and if they do, every minute counts, make sure you know what to do if you have a stroke. Unfortunately, since stroke symptoms are often not recognized at first, many patients do not seek medical care until it is too late to offer some beneficial treatments.

If you are experiencing stroke symptoms, call 911 or get to the Emergency Department immediately.
