Working Together for Better Health
Now in it its sixth year, the Mountain View Hospital Foundation is a dedicated partner in the important work of improving the overall well being of our community. In 2007 and 2008, the Foundation raised over $60,000 through its primary fundraisers. The proceeds fund CHIP (Community Health Improvement Partnership) projects and programs, and help support other vital community health improvements efforts. We are grateful to the Foundation for their committment to creating a healthier hospital - and a healthier community. Here is just a few CHIP programs that are helping us create the healthiest community in Oregon.
Community Gardens
The Madras Willow Creek Community Garden is located on the corner of 10th and B Street and was established by CHIP in 2007 to promote a healthy community, provide food for families and create recreational and therapeutic opportunities for the community. The garden is maintained by volunteers coordinated through CHIP and garden plots are available to anyone interested, but the number of plots are limited.
Something to Smile About
Recognizing a need for dental care among underserved school children in Jefferson County, CHIP members joined with the school nurses from Culver and 509J to find a solution. It came in the form of a $10,000 grant from The Bean Foundation, which will allow the CHIP Dental Program to provide care to schoolchildren in need. Next will be finding a way to provide preventive dental care for pregnant women, infants and young children.
Seeking Answers to a Weighty Question
How do we help children who are overweight get healthy? CHIP has received a grant from the Northwest Health Foundation as a first step in finding the answer to that question. The grant, one of only four awarded, will be used to gather data in the 509J School District. Childhood obesity has long-term health implications, and this grant will position CHIP to move toward implementing an intervention phase next year.
