General Surgeon Joins Mountain View Medical & Surgical Associates and Mountain View Hospital
Mountain View Medical & Surgical Associates (MSA) and Mountain View Hospital (MVH) welcomes the addition of Dr. Thomas Scherer, General Surgeon. Dr. Scherer brings exceptional expertise and a passion for his patients to Madras and will continue to see patients in Prineville.
Dr. Scherer began his career as a General Medical Officer and Flight Surgeon in the US Army in 1984 at the Yuma Proving Grounds, Arizona . “My experience in the US Army allowed me the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people. I found that especially rewarding and challenging. I feel that my practices in both Jefferson and Crook Counties provide the same diverse experience in many ways, and I look forward to the same challenges and opportunities,” Dr. Scherer noted.
Dr. Scherer attended Loyola University in Chicago , receiving a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He graduated from Midwestern Osteopathic Medical School in 1983. Dr. Scherer interned at Doctor’s Hospital in Columbus , Ohio , and completed his surgical residency at Phoenix General Hospital in Phoenix , Arizona and Midwestern University in Chicago , Illinois . His extensive experience in trauma centers in Chicago , Columbus , and Phoenix will be a great asset to our local communities.
Dr. Scherer is a trained and board certified surgeon capable of performing all aspects of surgery, including breast, gastrointestinal, gynecological and vascular surgeries. He is especially skilled in laparoscopic (less invasive) surgical procedures, which include gall bladder, appendectomy, hernia, tubal sterilization, ovarian and hysterectomy surgery, and hiatal hernia (heartburn).
Dr. Scherer has been licensed in Oregon since 1991 and is a proud member of the Central Oregon Medical Society, Oregon Medical Association, American Medical Association, American Osteopathic Association, American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Scherer is married and has two children. When he is not performing surgeries, Dr. Scherer enjoys spending time with his family, fly fishing, boating, skiing and working in his rose garden.
When asked what best describes what it means to be a physician, Dr. Scherer noted, “To teach, to heal, to serve. I consider the opportunity of becoming the hometown general surgeon for our local communities an honor and plan to not let the community down.”
