New Endocrinology Care and Diabetic Education Now Available in Madras

Dr. Patrick McCarthy and Tina Gruner, RD/CDE joins Mountain View Medical & Surgical Associates

Mountain View Medical and Surgical Associates (MSA) is proud to announce that Dr. Patrick McCarthy, Endocrinologist from Advanced Specialty Care (ASC) of Bend will see patients in Madras beginning April 17, 2008 every other week.

Dr. McCarthy specializes in the care of metabolic diseases to include treating and monitoring patients with: diabetes; thyroid growths, cancer or enlarged thyroid glands; obesity; conditions such as metabolic syndrome or rare adrenal growths that may cause hypertension; lipid disorders; other disorders that can affect bones; and pituitary conditions.

Today’s announcement is part of a longtime goal for creating a multi-specialty care clinic for the local communities.  “We are excited to create a comprehensive specialty clinic at MSA that features specialty services such as Cardiology, Endocrinology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics, and Gynecology, General Surgery, and Podiatry care,” noted Jay Henry, CEO from Mountain View Hospital .

The specialized services will continue to be offered by visiting physicians from the Central Oregon region.  “We’ve come a long way, and we plan to continue working aggressively to recruit physicians so that we can keep pace with the growing demand for family oriented specialty care,” said Henry.

Dr. McCarthy is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism.  In addition he has been a member of the American Diabetes Association, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, International Association for Clinical Densitometry, American Medical Association and the Oregon Medical Society.

“Beyond the shared community commitment Dr. McCarthy will work closely with the local family practice providers at Madras Medical Group (MMG) and MSA so that there is a structure and support for important clinical and educational care between the primary care provider and their patients,” explained Mike Harlan, Administrator of ASC.  Patients will benefit directly from this more integrated, patient-focused approach to treatment, he said.

“By forming partnerships with the patient, family practice providers, specialists and other health educators, health professionals can contribute to the patient in a positive way when addressing important health care challenges,” said Dr. David Evans, Family Practice Physician from MMG.

To further augment the new Endocrinology specialty services, Tina Gruner, Registered Dietitian (RD), and Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), has also joined forces with Registered Dietician, Shelly Schwartz at MSA in an effort to enhance the treatment services for children and adults with diabetes.  Another benefit of Gruner and Schwartz providing consultations and educational care at MSA is patients access to practitioners in key specialty areas often associated with diabetes such as cardiology, orthopedics, and more.

“There are community members who are not prepared to cope with the increasing number of people confronted with diabetes and struggling to keep it under control,” noted Tina Gruner, RD/CDE.  “This collaborated approach to diabetes will allow us to lead the way to new solutions – both for patients who have a primary care physician at MSA and MMG and for people everywhere with diabetes.”

“We are excited about bringing these additional diabetes resources to our community.  An Endocrinologist and Dietician working in concert with a patient’s primary care provider represent a comprehensive and best practice approach to diabetes care,” noted Henry.
