May 1 to June 19:  Bereavement Support Group begins.  Held Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Home Health and Hospice conference room, this is a free grief support group for those who have lost someone through death.  Together we learn what to expect during this challenging time, discover that we are not alone in the process and find the support that can make it easier to cope. May 1:  A new session begins for the hospital’s Prepared Childbirth Class.  A seven-week course that covers the stages of your pregnancy, delivery, your newborn, nutrition, medications and much more.  Class leader is penny Winterburn, RN, IBCLC.  The series is free if you plan to deliver at PMH; otherwise, cost is $40. May 6—12: We celebrate National Nurses Week, ending with National Nurses Day, May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. “Making a Difference Every Day” is the theme for this week.   Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers.

May 9: deadline for entries in the Pioneer Memorial Hospital Contests for Elementary students. See our website, www.cascadehealthcare.org, and select the PMH portion.  A link to entry guidelines is at the bottom of that page.  Recognition for every entrant; prizes for the winners in the two categories.

May 11-17: PMH observes Hospital Week, and invites you to come to the Admitting hallway to view and vote on all the entries in the Hospital Week Art and Writing Contests for elementary school students.  Drawings for prizes include free health screenings and cheesecakes from the hospital Kitchen as well as a consultation with dietitian Shelly Schwartz, RD, LD.

May 13:  Free Brown Bag Lunch & Learn: “Rhythm of thy Soul,” about the barriers and solutions to weight management, presented by Shelly Schwartz, RD, LD.  Noon to 1 p.m. in the Ochoco Conference Room at Pioneer Memorial Hospital , part of the PMH Hospital Week celebration.

May 13:  Town Hall Meeting “Preventing Underage Drinking” begins at 6:30 p.m. at Crook County Middle School .  Together we’ll work in break out sessions to develop plans to meet this challenge in our community.  Call Cindy Brockett at 416-8392 for details.

May 19 to 25:  Emergency Medical Services Week.  A big “Thank you!” to all the first-responders in Crook County for being there for us when we need help with a medical emergency, not just this week, but all year.

May 28:  “Chest Pain and You,” a presentation about the PMH A.M.I. team starts at 12:15 p.m. at the Soroptimists Senior Center , 180 NE Belknap.  Virginia Sandau, RN, BSN, PMH Quality manager and Michele Frandsen, RN, BSN, Emergency Department manager are the presenters.

May 30:  Circles of Care luncheon. Open to anyone who has lost a loved one.  Begins at noon. A light lunch of soup and rolls will be provided, along with caring and sharing.  Cascade Room, PMH Home Health wing.  Call 447-2510 for details.
