Health Calendar for October 2008

  1. October 2: Pioneer Art in the hospital opens a new exhibit with works by local artist Sherri Overholser. Sherri paints in traditional oils in a realistic style, however, at times veers into experimental just for kicks. Look for her works in the Admitting hallway through the end of the month.
  2. October 4:   Family Fest in Pioneer Park . Begins with the Pet Parade—line-up at 9:30 a.m. at 4th and Claypool. Anyone can participate, pet or no pet, can sign up at the line-up location.   Come to Pioneer Park where the Fourth Annual Family Fest offers fun and entertainment for the whole family: live music, hands-on arts & crafts, games and food vendors and much more.  Contact Cindy Brockett at 416-8392 for more information.
  3. October 6: Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Monday evening. Call 416-2017 for location and more information.
  4. October 7:   Powerful Tools for Caregivers: feeling stretched caring for an older adult?   balance your life: Powerful Tools for Caregivers. Pioneer Memorial Hospital will offer this free series: beginning Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room next to Clinic Pharmacy.  The six-week program is for any family caregiver who is dealing with the demands of caring for someone with a chronic condition.   It is designed to provide caregivers with the tools they need to take care of themselves. The program was developed by Portland-based Legacy Health System’s Care Giver Services. Registered nurses Jane Aggers and Priscilla Bigler are the leaders for the class.   5. October 15: How to Deal with People in Crisis: a free seminar brought to you by the Crook County CHIP Mental Health committee on Wednesday, October 15 in the Broughton Room at Crook County Library. Please register by Friday, October 10. Licensed professional counselor Todd Noble, MA, MS presents information for anyone who works with the public: how to communicate with someone who is angry, upset or frightened, how to keep a bad situation from becoming worse, how to recognize signs of mental illness, resources for help in our community and lots more.   6. October 9: Prepared Childbirth series begins at 7 p.m. in the Cascade Room, Home Health wing of Pioneer Memorial Hospital . This seven-week course covers the stages of your pregnancy, delivery, your newborn, nutrition, medications and much more. Class leader is Penny Winterburn , RN, IBCLC. The series is free if you plan to deliver at Pioneer Memorial Hospital ; otherwise, cost is $40. Call 447-6254 to register.
  7. October 30: next session begins for Living Well with Diabetes. This comprehensive five-session series covers many aspects of how to live, well, with diabetes: eating well, how to read food labels, foot care, medications and effects of uncontrolled diabetes. Cost is $15 per class, $65 for the series. Scholarships are available; people may come to any class or to all five. Call Sharon Vail at 447-6254, ext. 380 to register and for more information.
  8. October 30:   Flu and Pneumonia Shot Clinics begin at the Crook County Health Department at 375 NW Beaver Street ; Suite 100 , held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  You will need to call and make an appointment for your flu shot: 447-5165.  Flu shots are $25; Pneumonia shots are $30.  CCHD is able to bill Medicare and Medicaid.  The Health Department cautions people not to get the flu shot too early; the protection an immunization provides may wear off before the end of flu season.  Consult your healthcare provider with any questions.  Shot clinics at CCHD continue in November on the 7th, 14th, 19th and 20th, all from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  9. October 31:   Circles of Care: luncheon at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in the Cascade Room, Home Health wing.  Begins at 12:00 noon, and is open to anyone who has lost a loved one. Contact Brenda Wilson for information:  447-2510.
