What does a Dietitian do?

Pioneer Memorial Hospital offers one-on-one nutrition counseling services with a registered dietitian who will work with you to create a custom-tailored plan to meet your personal needs, desires and goals.

Shelly Schwartz, the Registered and Licensed Dietitian affiliated with PMH, can develop an individualized eating plan that will help you reach your personal health goals.

Focusing On Your Unique Dietary Health Concerns

Our dietitian can assess and provide for the nutritional needs of patients, and patients with disabilities. Areas of special interest include diabetes, geriatrics and maternal and child health. The dietitian will work with your physician to provide a treatment plan which may include the following:

  • ideal body weight, caloric and dietary needs
  • foods that help facilitate swallowing
  • special diets
  • dietary modifications that need to be made as a result of the disability
  • patient and family education on nutrition topics related to diseases (i.e., diabetes)

Healthy Eating Leads to Good Health

Eating healthy foods can bring real enjoyment to your life, lower stress levels and give you more energy to keep up with a busy lifestyle. Eating a well-balanced diet can also be an essential part of the treatment of some serious medical conditions, such as hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, high-risk pregnancy or cancer. Consultations with our dietitian are held both in the hospital and on an outpatient bases. Topics many patients are eager to cover include:

  • How to prepare tasty low-sodium foods
  • Foods to control blood pressure or cholesterol
  • For kidney dysfunction
  • Diets appropriate for diabetes and renal care
