Outpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation

Helping Children Help Themselves

At St. Charles, we take a "whole child" approach to helping children learn life skills and independence, providing comprehensive, child-specific programs in all three areas of pediatric therapy:

Pediatric Physical Therapy

The team of Pediatric Physical Therapy specialists at St. Charles will work with your child to develop an individualized program with focus on mobility and fitness. Therapy may focus on the following areas:

  • Improving motion, strength, balance, coordination, endurance, mobility and wellness
  • Achieving age appropriate developmental milestones
  • Participating in age appropriate gross motor and school activities
  • Independently negotiating his or her environment
  • Evaluating for equipment needs to maximize mobility and independence

Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Pediatric Occupational Therapists promote independence in children, with role performance in the areas of home, school, play, and self-care.

  • Improve fine motor skills and coordination
  • Improve handwriting
  • Promote age appropriate play skills
  • Promote independence in self-care and daily living skills
  • Improve sensory processing skills
  • Help with self-modulation and behavior state
  • Determine adaptive equipment needs for independence in the home and community

Pediatric Speech and Language Therapy

The goal of Pediatric Speech Language Pathologists is to help children become successful communicators and independent language learners.

At St. Charles, our Pediatric Speech Language Specialists use child-specific, individualized programs to develop speech, language, feeding and swallowing, oral motor, voice, or fluency skills. The benefits of rehabilitation may include:

  • Improving understanding and expression of oral and written language
  • Improving speech production and articulation skills
  • Decreasing stuttering behaviors
  • Developing skills associated with problem solving, reasoning, cognition, language and memory
  • Improving vocal hygiene
  • Improving eating skills and swallowing patterns
  • Developing social skills and organizational/academic strategies
  • Providing Instrumental Diagnostics for swallowing
  • Evaluating for communication devices and providing set up when appropriate

Whether your child needs physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy or a combination of these services the St. Charles rehabilitation team - in collaboration, when appropriate, with staff social workers and psychologists - will develop an interdisciplinary program that is individualized to meet his or her unique needs.
