Sleep Disorders Should Be Diagnosed and Treated
Sleep disorders are a physiological condition that causes disruptive sleep patterns. According to the National Institutes of Health, over 70 million Americans suffer from sleep and wakefulness disorders-with 60 percent of all cases being a chronic disorder.
Most people think of snoring as nothing more than noise that's irritating to our roommates or bed partners. The truth is that loud and persistent snoring can actually be a serious health problem. Snoring sounds are caused by a partial collapse in your airway when throat muscles relax during sleep. This smaller sized airway causes you to work much harder to breathe - which means interrupted and non-restorative sleep. Chronic snoring may also cause daytime problems such as sleepiness, exhaustion and higher blood pressure.
If you have a sleep disorder it should be diagnosed and treated. Many sleep-related problems that affect your health, safety and quality of life include:
- Reduced mental and physical health
- Overall lower quality of life
- Increased risk of disease including stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure and diabetes
- Decreased ability to resist and fight illness
- Depression
- Sexual inadequacies and problems
- Difficulty performing mental and physical tasks
- Reduced productivity
- Problems due to lower job performance
- Reduced concentration
- Impaired memory and judgment
- Confusion
- Irritability
- Dulled social skills
- Falling asleep at inappropriate times
- Risk of car- and work-related accidents
- Danger from sleepwalking
