In addition, every woman diagnosed has a Breast Cancer Case Manager and a Navigator to guide her through the system to ensure that her questions are answered.

Facts on Sara’s Project and Breast Cancer for Central Oregon:

• More that 200 women in our (Central and Eastern Oregon) communities will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
• The Sara Fisher Project supports the Navigator program – peer support for newly-diagnosed patients from a survivor at least one year out of treatment. Forty-eight (48) women were served in 2007.
• Powered by a grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Sara’s Project served 50 rural women in the 2007-08 grant year diagnosed with cancer. Gas cards, grocery cards and/or lodging are available for women who have to travel outside of their communities for treatment.
• Sara’s Project reached approx 4,400 men and women in the 2007-08 grant year in Central and Eastern Oregon with breast health awareness – information about risk factors, screening, self-exam and local resources – at classes, community events and health fairs. This was also funded by a generous grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
• Most underinsured or uninsured women can receive mammograms and treatment (if cancer is detected) through the Oregon Breast & Cervical Cancer program. Sara’s Project provides information about the OBCC program and assistance for those few women who don’t meet the criteria.

Please join us this Friday, Oct. 10 for Hope Couture which remains a vital fundraiser for Sara’s Project and those fighting breast cancer.

About the Sara Fisher Project
Sara’s Project is a breast health education and outreach partnership created by the St. Charles Regional Cancer Treatment Center. It was founded to promote early detection of breast cancer, build awareness and provide support to women facing cancer. The project honors Sara Fisher, a cherished teacher, counselor and active community volunteer who died in 1992 after a seven-year battle with breast cancer. The Sara Fisher Breast Cancer Project is supported by a variety of people concerned with women’s health: local physicians, community members, breast cancer survivors, state and national partners, and the friends and family of Sara Fisher.
