St. Charles Cancer Center and Cancer Hope Network seek volunteers

Application deadline set for Monday, April 20

Bend, Ore - The St. Charles Cancer Center and the Cancer Hope Network Volunteer Program are seeking local volunteers. The Cancer Hope Network Volunteer Program works to provide one-on-one emotional and practical support to cancer patients or their caregivers by matching local survivors to those currently undergoing treatment. It also allows local cancer patients and caregivers to obtain the unique insight that only individuals who have experienced cancer can provide.

Volunteers are trained by the Cancer Hope Network, a national nonprofit group that has been providing support services for cancer patients and their caregivers since 1981. In 2008, Cascade Healthcare Community partnered with CHN to create a local Hope Network program for Central and Eastern Oregon. The 33 volunteers trained in 2008 represented 21 different types of cancer in various stages of treatment protocols. The goal of this year's training is to expand the program's capacity in order to meet the needs of individuals fighting cancer in the community.

Volunteers must attend one of two training sessions, which are scheduled for Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Charles Bend. The deadline for application is Monday, April 20, and applications are available at www.cascadehealthcare.org/cancer or by calling 541-706-2969.
