September wheelchair drive by St. Charles Rehabilitation a success
Bend, Ore. - A wheelchair drive held on Sept. 18 and 19 at St. Charles Bend successfully collected a variety of mobility devices to be sent to developing nations.
According to Anesa Moyer, supervisor for the St. Charles Rehabilitation Center, the center worked with Wheels for Humanity. Over the two-day drive, the center was able to collect 72 wheelchairs including manual, power and ultra-lights; 56 front-wheel walkers, 24 four-wheel walkers, 34 sets of crutches, 14 cushions, five boxes of wheelchair parts, one Hoyer lift, an infant swing, a reclining bath chair, a commode, 14 single point canes, and five standers.
Wheels for Humanity will distribute the items in developing nations across the globe to those who may not have the resources to purchase necessary mobility equipment on their own.
"St. Charles Rehabilitation is honored to be working with the Wheels for Humanity," Moyer said. "They make the process of collecting the devices straight forward and they have an impressive area they serve. One of the wheelchairs we collected could end up in Africa, Southeast Asia, Central America or anywhere in between. It is really powerful to think that someone's mobility device that is no longer of use to them here in Central Oregon can truly change someone else's life in another country."
